High Confidence Prompt Injection in a GenAI User Message
Detects a GenAI user message that a security_ai classifier scores as
high-confidence prompt injection. The rule requires a high prediction from
one of four models: instruction override, encoding, word obfuscation, or
hash string. ES|QL COMPLETION then reviews the message and drops likely
false positives before an alert is created.

32## Triage and Analysis
33
34### Investigating High Confidence Prompt Injection in a GenAI User Message
35
36A security_ai classifier scored this user message above 0.98, and the completion
37model returned verdict TP with confidence of at least 0.9. `Esql.prompt_body` is
38the text the completion model reviewed. `Esql.summary` is its one-line reason.
39
40### Possible investigation steps
41
42- Read `Esql.prompt_body`, then the full `gen_ai.input.messages` conversation.
43- Compare `Esql.summary` with `security_ai.instruction_override.input_messages.top_snippet.text`,
44 `security_ai.word_obfuscation.input_messages.strings`, `security_ai.encoding.input_messages.decoded`,
45 and `security_ai.hash_string.input_messages.strings`.
46- Identify the caller with `user.id` and check whether the same user has prior alerts.
47- Review `gen_ai.output.messages` for a complied response. That is covered by
48 High Confidence Malicious GenAI Assistant Response when the assistant text itself scores high.
49
50### False positive analysis
51
52- A completion model can confirm a benign decoding exercise or a commit SHA.
53 Check whether the text is a documented example before treating it as an attack.
54- A direct instruction-override can make the completion model refuse instead of
55 returning a verdict line. Those events do not alert here. Use the
56 instruction-override score and the raw user text for that case.
57
58### Response and remediation
59
60- If the confirmed text asks the model to ignore its instructions, reveal a hidden
61 prompt, or return secrets, revoke the session and review the assistant response.
62- If the text is a known-benign example, add an exception for that application.

Investigating High Confidence Prompt Injection in a GenAI User Message
A security_ai classifier scored this user message above 0.98, and the completion
model returned verdict TP with confidence of at least 0.9. Esql.prompt_body is
the text the completion model reviewed. Esql.summary is its one-line reason.
Possible investigation steps
- Read
Esql.prompt_body, then the fullgen_ai.input.messagesconversation. - Compare
Esql.summarywithsecurity_ai.instruction_override.input_messages.top_snippet.text,security_ai.word_obfuscation.input_messages.strings,security_ai.encoding.input_messages.decoded, andsecurity_ai.hash_string.input_messages.strings. - Identify the caller with
user.idand check whether the same user has prior alerts. - Review
gen_ai.output.messagesfor a complied response. That is covered by High Confidence Malicious GenAI Assistant Response when the assistant text itself scores high.
False positive analysis
- A completion model can confirm a benign decoding exercise or a commit SHA. Check whether the text is a documented example before treating it as an attack.
- A direct instruction-override can make the completion model refuse instead of returning a verdict line. Those events do not alert here. Use the instruction-override score and the raw user text for that case.
Response and remediation
- If the confirmed text asks the model to ignore its instructions, reveal a hidden prompt, or return secrets, revoke the session and review the assistant response.
- If the text is a known-benign example, add an exception for that application.
